Part 4- Last weeks fighters fitness test

I'm hooked! Everyday I'm practicing my kickboxing balance work in my daily hour of power ritual. Throughout every day I find myself prancing around like Billy Elliot before he could dance. Learning how to control your body can become addictive. I turn up to the session early as usual and eager to start. To be honest I was still suffering from yesterdays unhealthy over done cheat day. Even though I was feeling on the dodgy side I couldn't wait to get stuck into the lesson.
The past 3 weeks we had been focusing on spinning kicks. Today was a struggle to develop the height for my spinning kick. I felt very restricted. My timing was off so I have been given some kick target practice to build up my functional mobility. My balance and co-ordination has really come on! Spinning jumps are looking crisp. I just need the kick to complete it. By the end of the week I will have a nice high spinning kick. Watch this space!
My coach Phil and I got to do a light sparring warm up. It was amazing how relaxed I felt. A few bloopers but on the whole I was seeing and feeling so in tune with my mind and body. Phil has been teaching me how to block kicks to counter and wow that lessons paid off. My head was saying, "who is this guy and how is he doing this?".... "Woah stop, focus". When you feel and respond well it's easy to lose focus in a moment. Do you know what I mean? I use to get this playing sports like cricket and snooker where I use to do a great shot and then I'd be really really pleased and excited and then make a big blooper. Discipline is a big lesson I'm stiĺl learning. Bruce Lee said,"don't think, feel".
Once warmed up I was feeling well balanced. It was time for sharp kicking practice. At the moment a trained kickboxer will see me coming from a mile away. As my coach Phil elegantly put it, "he had enough time to go home for a cup of tea", in his strong Bristol accent. He's a legend! Always full of praise, mean when he needs to be and finds the perfect time to make me smile. Quality coaching! I'm learning so much and so fast but more importantly I'm loving it. I look forward to my lessons with him. It's one of my highlights of the week! I got sharper but I decided this is also my homework for this week.
Fighter fitness was the main objective of todays lesson! A taste of my own medicine. I was pushed hard on the bag and off. Sharp front jabbing kick with a straight jab and into body attacks for 5 seconds then extreme burpee practice with bag squats and torso hit conditioning. Sh#t, god, help, wow...more. It was barely 5 minutes and my heart was on fire, my body was rushing and I wanted more!!!! (Once I recovered my breath).
I'm not made of glass after all. I video recorded the hit conditioning bit which I'm sure viewers will feel slightly alarmed by. I must be sick because I loved it. No pain no gain. I'm getting strong and smarter fast. What a journey ahead! I'm excited. Bring on next Saturday!
Next week Phil won't have time for that cup of tea ;-)
