Previously on RENEWED FROM THE ASHES- My Kickboxing Journey
I was pretty nervous. Fitness test day! My coach Phil wanted to understand where abouts I was at in terms of being fight ready. If I scored 300 points I'm eligible, 400 points and I'm a freak! I really wanted freak status.
Today I was joined by my not so little brother Billy Johnson. He originally just wanted to just come watch but then he got itchy feet and asked if he could join in. Fair play to him. So Billy and I got warmed up and played around with a few strength exercises whilst waiting for our time to join our kickboxing guru. It's amazing what you learn when you're relaxed.
Kick off time and Phil starts us off with jumping spinning practice! Boom! Welcome little bro to co-ordination haha. He picked it up quite quickly to be fair! Billy definately beat me to the share of the brain pool. I have been practicing all week but you wouldn't of believed it if you had seen how I started. Then one small tweak with my head and feet position and boom! I'm back.
15 minutes or so in and Phil's forgot about the fitness test or at least I thought for a brief minute. He read my mind!
Billy was invited to join in too, ha! Can you imagine how thrilled he was on his 1st lesson? I go first! Seemed reasonable enough. Only 5 exercises, 5 minutes to be as busy as possible. BURPEES! Seriously who invited burpees? Oh and of course Phil added something special in to make it a little more challenging. Smashed it! There's always a danger of cheating form in work outs requiring as many reps possible in time frames. Well that's if you're not under the extremely well observant coach Phil Newman. STOP STOP STOP...proper form please. Start again! Told! I should know better but I thought I could get away with it. I was only a few ...dozen degrees out of full lock outs in press ups. After a breath taking lactate disabling 5.2 minutes I completed it with a score of 287. Satisfactory but off the marks of Pheonix Freestyle fight fitness and well off the freak status. Mark my words..I WILL GET FREAK STATUS! I love challenges. I enjoy competing and pushing myself.
My turn was over, little brothers turn now and he wacks up a score of 199! Ouch 1 short off 200. Yes I did work that out by myself. Again fair play to him as he's only just started getting back into fitness. I'm so proud of him. He's had a difficult time and he's coming through strong! What a man!
Onto padwork! Bang bang bang bang! The gym echoes as Billy and I get stuck into roundhouse kicks one after the other. It was a proud moment to see my brother do so well. He's such an amazing athlete.
Working out with Billy and Phil was inspiring. I can't wait for next Saturday! Homework throughout the week to carry on with. Onwards, forwards and upwards as Phil said. I'm developing fast and one day I'd love to be an inspiring kickboxing coach too. Never underestimate the journey a kickboxing coach can take you on. "The master appears when the student is ready".
