Knee pain is extremely common. It affects almost everyone at some point in their life. Whether you're active or inactive it can get you.
Here's a poem I found on pain by Rhiannon M Franklin. I love it because for my blog post on knee pain it holds so much truth. Take it from a guy who quit everything he loved at 14 years old because of poor knees.
the pain that you feel,
but cant touch.
a pain you know of,
but cant explain
a pain so feirce
you go insane
the unknown pain
that clutches your heart
and burns in your soul
in your life
to strong to carry on
the unknown pain
that clouds your mind
and devours your every thought
the pain of broken promises
thats unheard of
the pain that's

There are so many types of knee issues that lead to pain such as sprained ligaments, strained muscles and tendons, torn meniscus, hemarthrosis, osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osgood-shlatter disease, chondromalacia patellae, osteochondritis dissecans, tumours, tendinitis, bursitis, synovitis, not to mention a few deformities, syndromes, dislocations, fractures and referred knee pain issues. The list goes on and on.
There's so much that can go wrong with the knees. Before we get our knickers in a twist we have to understand this. Knowledge is a step closer to power. With an understanding of what our knees need we have a podium place ready for the taking. To understand the knee you need to understand how your body works.
I use to be a great believer in the saying you know your body better than anyone else but alot has changed. The human body goes beyond mere feeling. Most of us are running around in a fast moving world with a focus on surviving the rat race in the common way of life. What time or even interest do you have in learning how about these things.
I'm going to cut to the chase. A poor knee needs a good teacher which if you can be bothered is you or me. Just a warning though. When learning about the knee you will need to be more open minded than anyone you know of! The knee is not just capable of bending or moving in a forward and back motion. The label hinge joint is a major throw off. The knee is not just capable of flexion and extension, it's also able to abduct, adduct (move sideways), internally rotate and externally rotate.
The knee desperately requires multi-directional mobility and strength from the hips fascia & muscle systems and even more so is needed from the feet and ankles which is gained from three dimensional exercises involving gravity, ground reaction, mass and momentum. (lunge matrix) Another words cycling WILL NOT STRENGTHEN YOUR KNEE AND NOR WILL SWIMMING. If anything it could make your knee worse off. FACT!
Referred pain is very common. As the father of function once said, "the knee is stuck in the middle with no where to hide". (Physiotherapist Dr Gary Gray, Gray Institute). Knees feel the pain but they aren't the cause.
Sort out the deep routed issues. Foam roll or get a sports massage therapist. Learn from a coach who knows how the three dimensional exercise workouts could benefit you as an individual. Strengthen your feet and hips to take a step closer to richer healthier knees.
PS. Barefoot rules!!!
Now 5 years of being happy knees!!!
