Create resistance in your sprint work. Run your fastest, on the biggest hill with added weight for 20 seconds. Challenge your gears on the biggest climbs and you will smash those simple easy flats. High level intensity training for just 12 minutes can increase your fitness drastically and be a million times more effective than BLSD (boring long slow distance). It's important to not rule out BSLD altogether as it has it's place but don't expect to be faster if this plays a majority role in your training plans.
